So far we discussed where to get new gear. We still don't know what to get... Of course, you can just run around like crazed weasels and try to acquire (and wear) every single purple that comes your way. OR you can do what is required of you at lvl70 and build your gear towards your class and specialization. At endgame, you are expected to play a very specific goal in each party. Your gear should make you stronger in that role so that your party benefits from your presence.

To find out what your toon is expected to do in a party and the three most important stats for your toon, please take a look at the following table. These three stats are the numbers you need to increase as much as possible. It is OK to increase other stats also, but whenever you need to choose between your three critical stats and some other stats, your three main stats should win.

This particular table is for Karazhan qualification. Gear preparation is quantified for Kara. Here's how to determine if your gear is ready. Look at the table and the numbers in each column. Divide your, unbuffed, total in each column by the suggested number. Add those numbers up. If your total is greater than 3, you are golden. If not, the lower your number, the more you'll feel less and less like an asset and more like a liability. (or rather your party will feel it and if they are not nice, they will let you know...)

(For spell damage and spell crit, general numbers are given. If you have one specific spell school with a significant passive talent bonus, your spell damage from that school should be much higher than the general number below.)

        Example:
        1. Hex, a Protection Paladin (tank role), has 12,067 hp unbuffed, 13,852 armor and 495 defenxe. So his gear check is: (12.067/10,400)+(13,852/12,000)+(495/490)=1.16+1.15+1.01= 3.32. No problem

        2. Groo, a hunter (dps role), has 1197 AP, 16.75% crit and 5.26% hit. So his gear check is: (1,197/1,400)+ (16.75/16)+(5.25/5)=0.86+1.05+1.05=2.96. Not ready for prime time.

Now that we have established what you need to be looking for in new pieces of gear, let's do some research on the web. The best site for this is www.wowarmory.com. Go there and pull up your character. Your toon will be displayed in full gear - whatever you are wearing at the time. When you hover over each piece of gear, you will notice a new button with an arrow appearing next to it. This button will give you lists of items that contain upgrades (what the armory considers to be upgrades) for that piece of gear of yours. Look through that list and please understand that not each item listed there would qualify as an upgrade for your party role as established above. You can make a list of those items that you find appropriate based on the above criteria and also are reasonably within your reach (ie if you haven't been to Kara yet, please ignore the items that say Sunwell Plateau on them! :-)). You can also click on these items to find out more about them including where they can be obtained, for how much, any other stats, etc. You make your lists here and start executing. This website is your best friend.

As you acquire more new gear, you can also track your progress on http://be.imba.hu/. Once there, pull up your character. You will notice that not only you get some scores for your gear, your current position on a qualifications graph, but also additional hints on what to improve and how.

Try these and gear up. Kara awaits. (and please let me know if you have any questions.)
